Mike Daniel, CR Residential Addition $100,000 to $250,000
What happens when a real estate developer buys a home from a professional baseball player? He's stuck with a covered bating cage. And unless he's planning his own Little League team tryouts, the area becomes nothing more than an expensive conversation piece.
This was the challenge the builder faced when determining the best use of a space that was deemed wasted square footage.

The arrangement, was to provide an elegant, livable arrangment, allowing a seamless transition between the inside and outside, while being mindful of the close proximity of the existing pool at the back of the house. By extending the existing patio and adding intricate wood latticework above the walkway, incorporating rough sawn, dark-stained vintage timber, then dropping down the structure height two feet from the original home, the builder was able to maintain the home's original look and add Old World style. The stucco wrapped columns and matching stained wood finish helped to proportionately balance the backyard. Additional cantilevers were used to extend over the pool area, which also received a facelift.

extending a gable roofline over the existing patio, thereby providing the homeowner increased kitchen space while incorporating a more architecturally pleasing area.
Aesthetically, the kitchen now takes on a more lively and contemporary feel. Gleaming stainless steel appliances and sleek cabinetry are offset by brightly colored walls and strategically placed accent lighting. The counter tops convey local dessert hues and the skylights bring natural light into the previously dim florescent lit space.

Steve Yeomans Residential Kitchen $80,000 to $120,000
The existing galley-style kitchen in this home was extremely limiting for its young, busy family. With room for only one person at a time, the rest of the family was forced into other rooms of the house. The appliances, oak cabinetry and ceramic floor were all out dated and in desperate need of replacement. In addition, the adjoining covered patio could be better utilized if it were a more integral part of the family's daily lives.
The builder expanded the kitchen area by

attached addition, would cut their costs dramatically, providing the equivalent amount of additional space originally proposed from the architectural plans. Furthermore, constructing an attached addition enabled the new structure to more seamlessly blend with the existing home than a detached version. Most importantly, the builder was able to keep a separate entrance, which was the homeowner's goal.
The new office area features high performance windows protecting its interior from a high-heat southern exposure, offering expansive views of nearby mountains. A library flanks one wall, complete with a reference material and multi-media center with a flat screen monitor. Custom task lighting enables the homeowner to work in different areas without utilizing multiple light sources.
