Making a Difference - Community Outreach
Over the years, NARI members and their families have donated their time, talent and supplies to numerous worthy organizations including Rebuilding Together, Florence Crittenton, Susan G. Komen, Habitat for Humanity and most recently through Stardust Building Supplies own Angels on Call a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Dee Suomala (pictured above) is the Chapter's Treasurer and Secretary and spent many years working with Angels on Call -- a local organization devoted to assisting low or fixed income home owners with needed safety, security and quality of life repairs.
The latest good deed took place during May 2010 when a whole home makeover changed the lives of a grandmother and her family. After an intense fire nearly burned down the entire home, the smoke and water damage left the house completely uninhabitable. Dee pulled together an army of NARI members to make a true difference in the life of local resident Roxie Mae Harris restoring her home with a new roof, new kitchen (including countertops, cabinets, flooring and appliances), a new bathroom and fixed countless electrical, plumbing and heating and air conditioning problems in just four short weeks. An unbelievable timeline -- especially with an all volunteer crew! NARI members contributing to this cause included Red Mountain Renewal, Window World of Phoenix, Arizona Fire and Water Restoration, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery, Floor and Decor Outlet Center, LG Surfaces, and MasterTouch Contracting. The entire project is valued at more than $100,000.
In 2009, NARI volunteers organized by Dee and Angels on Call again led the way for a home makeover for a grandmother and two grandchildren. Plumbing and electrical problems were fixed, and the kitchen ceiling, which had caved in due to numerous water leaks was replaced. In total, a team of more than 40 community businesses helped to complete the renovation.
During National Make a Difference Day, NARI members along with Rebuilding Together helped paint the home of one Valley resident. Again Dee was at the helm. In fact, over 3700 volunteers from throughout throught the Valley, painted the homes of 150 elderly and disabled homeowners in 2008. Again Stardust Building Supplies via Angels on Call was instrumental in the coordination and organization of the project.
NARI thanks Stardust Non-Profit Building Supplies for the work that they do with Angels on Call and several other charities. They have two stores, one in Phoenix and one in Mesa that accepts tax deductable donations of new and used building materials and supplies and offers crews to help with deconstruction.
